It's Always Happy Hour Someplace
Ironically, it may have been the Prohibition era in United States History, when alcohol was universally outlawed in the country, for the practice to take hold in America. Intent on having their pre-dinner cocktail, and eating too, Americans began to gather in homes or speakeasies to have a drink or two before venturing out to restaurants where the practice was taboo. Before long, the naval term and the popular practice were combined and the rest is bar history.

Happy Hours Aren't Just for Liquor-Only Bars Anymore
Many bars, clubs, and lounges have some sort of happy hour in order to spur drink sales during times that would otherwise be slow. This, however, isn't as common in restaurants or lounges that place a high emphasis on their food. Those looking for a happy hour san diego, however, can find some exceptions. Cities like San Diego often have enough young residents to support establishments that go outside of the normal cookie-cutter experience. It's possible to find some that, for example, offer Mexican food made from unique recipes as the main draw, but that also serve alcohol and have happy hour specials.
Combinations like this cater to people who, above all else, want to avoid the boring "same old" that would be found at chain outlets. One thing that's important to note is that the term "hour" is used very loosely at drinking establishments. These time periods typically last at least two hours and sometimes three. The term "happy hour" has just been around so long that bars and lounges can use it as an easy shorthand for a period of time in which the drinks are cheaper. In some cases, the food will also be discounted.
The hours chosen for happy hours tend to be in the late afternoon and early evening, for instance, between 4 PM and 7 PM. This is done to draw customers before the busy time starts in the late evening and into the night. Due to the purpose of happy hours, it's almost unheard-of for them to happen on Saturdays. Saturday is the day that most bar-goers go out anyway, so there's no need to offer any incentives then.
Many establishments will see a distinct change in the clientele depending on what day of the week it is and what time of day it is. This is because some of the people who come later are still working when happy hours start, and once they get off work, they go home for dinner before coming back out. Each location will see its own clientele shift, so it's hard to predict just which people will come when. However, this phenomenon still makes it so that those who visit an establishment should check out multiple time periods to see which ones they prefer. This may turn out to be the time when the happy hour takes place, and if that's the case, the patron can look forward to enjoying great company along with discounted drinks or food.
